Best Travel Credit Card (Best Credit Cards For Travel Rewards)

Reward credit card offers

Today I want to share with you the best travel reward credit cards you should be using to accumulate points and rewards towards free flights, hotels, and other travel related expenses.

You can get a free flight and hotel stay per year just by owning one of these cards and maximizing your spending in a way that accumulates points the right way. Really, this is possible!

Here is my list of my favorite travel credit cards:

1. Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

If you’ve done any amount of research into finding the best travel rewards card, you’ve probably seen the Chase Sapphire Preferred card come up more than just once. It’s one of the most recommend travel credit card (perhaps the most) and for good reason.

The Chase Sapphire preferred card has an excellent sign up bonus of 50,000 points, a relatively small annual fee at $95 per year, and has no foreign transaction fees, which is great if you travel internationally.

But really, the Chase Sapphire credit card shines where most cards do not. It’s one of the most flexible credit cards and easy to redeem points card available.

2. Barclaycard Arrival Plus Credit Card

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus credit card is one of the best Mastercards for travel, perhaps the best out of all of them. Overall, it’s also one of the most recommend travel credit cards too. Some cool features of the card are earning 2 miles for every dollar spent, no brand or hotel restrictions when redeeming your points, and easy of redemption of points with a lot of flexibility.

This is great card particularly if you want to travel domestically in the United States. Most travel rewards optimizers have several credit cards for different purposes, and many include the Barclaycard Arrival Plus in their wallet arsenal.

3. American Express Premium Gold Card

Amex is currently offering 50,000 bonus points on this card for signing up, which is a very good deal. This card is great for traveling everywhere in the world. It’s also great for traveling business class or first class to destinations in the U.S. or International. Overall, it’s a very versatile card.

It’s points are very flexible and there are no restrictions. You book your flights with any travel company or online booking agency and give American Express a call to redeem the points towards travel.

4. Starwood Preferred Guest Card by American Express

I think it’s important to include a hotel specific credit card as part of your travel miles/points optimization strategy. The Starwood Preferred Guest Card by American Express is one of my top picks.

This card offers you a 25,000 bonus points sign up which is equivalent to about a few free night stay at a SPG qualifying property. Other perks include getting free nights stay at over 1200 properties around the world, annually.

You get 1 point per 1 dollar spent, which is less than many other travel reward credit cards. However, the SPG points are worth more than most other credit cards, because when you redeem them, they get you more. So it’s absolutely a credit card worth considering if you want to to include free hotel stays as part of your travel maximizing strategy.

5. Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card

One of the best travel rewards credit cards if you travel within the United States and/or travel with family. The points you accumulate do not expire and and you get a 25,000 bonus rewards points for signing up.

Other cool features include no blackout dates or seat restrictions when redeeming points, no checked bag fees (which saves a lot of money if you travel with a family), and no change fees. If you want to maximize travel around the United States, then this is a very good card to have.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premiere card is a fare based card and redeeming points during a seat sale makes this card incredibly powerful because it helps you get flights for even less points.

6. Bank Americard travel Rewards Credit Card

Probably the best travel rewards card with no annual fee is the Bank Americard travel rewards credit card. Most travel rewards cards that offer high sign up bonuses have annual fees, but this one does not, and will not come with a high sign up bonus. Currently, they are offering 20,000 bonus sign up points.

One of the biggest perks of owning this card is that you earn 1.5 points per dollar spent. There are no foreign transaction fees and your points do not expire. The great thing about this card is that you can book your travels on any destination website, whether it be flights, hotels, car rentals, or cruises. You will then redeem your points for a statement credit.

7. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture Travel rewards card would be a card for people who want to earn a high bonus reward and want a small annual fee. This card gets your first year annual fee waived, and then its $59 per year after that.

Other main benefits include a welcome bonus of 40,000 points which is equivalent to 400 dollars in travel points. Probably the best benefit of this card is that you will earn 2x the amount of points per every dollar spent. You can rack up points very quickly because all your purchases will be worth 2 points. Many other reward cards offer less, or offer 2x on only select categories of purchases.

Other than that, you get no blackout restrictions, no foreign transaction fees, and your accumulated miles don’t expire. It’s a very solid card.

8. CiTi ThankYou Premier Credit Card

This rewards card is one of the most popular travel credit card offered by CiTi Bank. It comes with a fairly good sign up bonus at 40,000 points and waived first year annual fee. It is $95 per year after that.

You get 1 point per every dollar spent, which isn’t all that exciting, however, there are bonus categories where you’ll accumulate extra points. Those include travel spending, which will get you 3x points per dollar spent. Travel includes things like gas, airfare and hotel bookings, taxis, parking garages, and cruises.

You’ll also get 2x the points for dining out. There are no points accumulation limits and and points do not expire. It’s a fairly well rounded credit card and I always see this card floating around in recommendations.

9. CiTi Prestige Credit Card

This credit card is a premium credit card offered by CiTi. Currently they are offering 50,000 points as a sign up bonus which is fantastic.

It comes with a much higher annual fee compared to the CiTi ThankYou Premier Credit card. The annual fee for this card is 450.

So why would you consider this card over the CiTi ThankYou Premier? If you take advantage of the bonuses it offers, this card can be much more valuable to you than the CiTi ThankYou Premier.

First, you automatically receive a $250 annual credit towards air travels. You use these points towards flight related expenses like flight tickets and baggage fees. You get access to special lounges in airports for more comfort during connecting flights. And you can extend your trip with a complimentary 4th night stay at any hotel of your choice.

There are no expiration of points and no limit to the amount of points you can accumulate. This credit card is suited for a traveler who wants to get the most out of their travels and or who travels frequently, or who just want a more rewarding experience while traveling.

10. British Airways Visa Signature Card

British Airways are offering massive sign up bonuses on their Avios rewards program. For signing up and meeting the minimum spend, you get 50,000 points, and yo can receive 25,000 or 50,00 more points by spending up to 20,000 dollars on this credit card in a year.

You will earn 1 British Avios for every dollar spent, and 3 Avios points for every dollar spent on British Airways purchases. There are no foreign transaction fees. The card has a $95 annual fee.

A big bonus perk is if you spend more than $30,000 in a calendar year on the card. You will get what’s called a Travel Together Ticket, which is summarized below on British Airways website:

  • »
Every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa Signature® card, you will earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years when you redeem Avios for a flight on British Airways. Taxes, fees and carrier charges are approximately $682-$1250 per adult in economy or $1250 in business class based on travel from Seattle to London. For more details, visit Overlay.

Pretty awesome perk.

Credit Rewards Card Summary:

Picking the right travel rewards card is integral to maximizing travel wherever you may go. choose one of the cards above (or a few) and make sure you meet the minimum spend to get those welcome bonus points. By just applying for these cards and getting the bonus points, you will have accumulated enough points to travel just about anywhere in the world.
